ASAKUSA

31 AUG 2018

ASAKUSA is a 40-square-meter exhibition venue for contemporary art programmes committed to advancing curatorial collaboration and practices. The programs follow the artistic development since Dada, Fluxus, the emergence of video art, essay films, institutional critique, while providing a historical framework to the local art context. It has worked with artists Thomas Hirschhorn, Santiago Sierra, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Yoko Ono, Anton Vidokle and Hito Steyerl amongst others, while introducing Japanese early avant-garde collectives such as Mavo (1924-25) and documentary filmmakers Proletarian Film League of Japan (Prokino, 1929-31). Artists talks, discussions, academic symposia and publications are produced alongside these programs.

As an independent initiative, ASAKUSA is run by a small voluntary team of two people —Koichiro Osaka, founder and the director, and Mariko Mikami, who currently lives and works in Düsseldorf, recruiting additional members to execute each project. This year, Asakusa launched “Asakusa Entertainments”, a screening exhibition and lecture series which critically reviews the history of mass culture and entertainment industries. The programme intends to promote discursive culture in the gallery’s neighborhoods, through inviting artists to deliver talk, performance and to produce new work in commission. Both print and digital publication of “Asakusa Journal” are currently under way, as well as the development of “Third Research”, an online, digitally curated media format that enables instant analysis of contemporary visual culture using deep learning technologies.

From December this year, Osaka is moving to New York for a 6-month fellowship programme, so the exhibition space in Tokyo will be vacant for that period. We are looking for someone with an inspirational idea to work collaboratively with us, either you being on site or working remotely, making full use of this opportunity.

This is an open call for proposals. Upon the receipt of your proposal, we will contact you individually and speak to you on a conversational basis.
